STEVE REICH AT CARNEGIE HALL
I went to Carnegie Hall last night and saw The Colin Currie Group perform Steve Reich’s “Drumming” (1970), “Quartet” (2013) and “Clapping Music” (1971). Reich writes in the program, “I am often asked what influence my visit to Africa in the summer of 1970 had on ‘Drumming’. The answer is ‘confirmation’. It confirmed my intuition that acoustic instruments could be used to produce music that was genuinely richer in sound than that produced with electronic instruments . . .” Check out the video below. Start it at 2:09 to hear something truly beautiful. It’s all live. There are no loop pedals or technology that cause looping. It’s just a group of live musicians. Food for thought.
