MR. MATT IS ENGAGED TO HIS BEST FRIEND, MAGGIE SHAW

Two years ago I met this girl at a holiday party for the teachers, parents and friends of an autism school (one that I still work at – the wonderful Atlas Foundation For Autism). Earlier that day I was wearing a penguin costume for the kids. I thought it would be funny to put on the penguin costume at the holiday party. What’s a holiday party without a giant singing penguin? (I have lots of penguin costume stories by the way – more to come soon). I’m terribly shy when I’m not onstage so I thought I would wear this penguin costume to lighten the mood at the party. This girl comes up to me. Her name was Maggie. She was glowing. She says, “You’re weird. I like that. Do you want to go on a date?” I almost cried (not really – but kind of). I said “Yes.” To be asked out. What a wonderful thing for a young man. I never thought it would happen that way. It was a lot less work and anxiety for me. I never knew that it would lead to me meeting – and marrying – my true best friend.
Fast forward to last weekend – exactly 2 years later – I decided to propose to my girlfriend at a Ravens football game during half-time (she is a HUGE Baltimore Ravens fan – she’s from there – sorry Steelers fans. Pittsburgh is still a great city). I snuck the penguin costume into the stadium underneath three coats (I thought it would be colder that day – however it was much warmer than expected – I was very hot). I realized that someone should film the proposal. I apologize for the bad camera angle but the two “bros” behind us were kind enough to agree to film the event and I am forever grateful for them doing that on the fly. You can hear them shouting,  “Yeaaaahhhh – congratulations – congratulations – YEAHHH” in the background. I snuck them my phone and at the end of haltime I excused myself – pretending I needed to use the men’s restroom. The result was this:

“You’re weird. I like that. Will you marry me?” The same way it began – and hopefully it will continue being that way. Hopefully even more so.
